The first ship carrying 500 tons of sugar from Dubai has reached Pakistan. With the arrival of imported sugar, the price of sugar in the country is likely to come down by up to Rs 5 per kg. Later, the private sector has signed agreements to import 200,000 metric tonnes of sugar.
The government has allowed the private sector to import 200,000 tonnes of duty-free sugar to overcome the shortage. One lakh tonnes of sugar is being imported at the official level through TCP. He said that the private sector has been given a quota of up to 10,400 tonnes for importing sugar. He has reached Pakistan with sugar.
With the arrival of imported sugar, the price of sugar in the country is likely to come down by up to Rs 5 per kg.
Duty-free import of sugar has been allowed but 17 per cent sales tax on sales has not been abolished. He said that by levying sales tax on local sales, the price of sugar could be further reduced. The government should also abolish the 17% sales tax imposed on the sale of sugar. The import of 200,000 sugar will be completed by next month. The SBP has also allowed 100% advance payment for sugar imports.
