Karachi's second street library will be inaugurated on Independence Day (today) at Baloch Chowk in Lyari.

The city's first street library, with over 600 books on different topics, opened on December 25 last year on the 144th anniversary of the birth of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah.

Street Library in Lyari was established in Baloch Chowk in partnership with District Municipal Corporation (DMC) South.

Karachi Commissioner Iftikhar Shallwani is expected to inaugurate the street library today.

The municipal administration had started work on the creation of the second street library of the metropolis from 5 July this year.

Karachi's first street library is located at Commissioner's Corner in Metropole.

The library was inaugurated by Sindh's chief secretary Syed Mumtaz Ali Shah.

Appreciating the library's establishment, Shah said the library will promote the culture of reading. He announced that similar libraries will also be established in other cities in the province, including Hyderabad and Sukkur.

Meanwhile, Shallwani said the idea of ​​creating a street library was part of his efforts to promote reading culture in the city. He said all six boroughs in the city will have such street libraries in the coming days.

It is pertinent to mention here that after Karachi, Hyderabad is poised to get its first street library on Pakistan's Independence Day which is celebrated across the country.

The Hyderabad administration has developed a street library in the iconic "Thadi Sadak" (cool breeze street), which will be inaugurated.

The Deputy Commissioner of Hyderabad in a tweet previously said that the works on the first street library in Hyderabad are almost finished and that he will inaugurate the project on Independence Day.
